Description
This WILA Type V12 30° lower die is designed as a practical acute-angle bending solution for sheet metal approximately 1.5 mm thick. The 12 mm V-opening corresponds to the commonly used air-bending guideline of selecting a die opening near eight times the sheet thickness, making V12 a logical starting point for many 1.5 mm mild-steel applications.
Unlike the narrower V6 and V8 dies, this V12 profile provides more space for material flow during bending. The wider opening generally requires less air-bending force for a given sheet thickness and produces a larger natural inside bend radius. This makes the die suitable for components where bend consistency, material flow and reduced localized stress are more important than achieving the smallest possible radius.
The 30° groove enables deep acute-angle forming when used with a correctly selected acute punch. It can produce finished acute profiles or create the initial fold for a subsequent hemming or flattening operation. Typical applications include sheet metal enclosures, doors, panels, covers and fabricated components requiring folded safety edges.
The die features a 55 mm working height, a 25 mm body width and a 17 mm lower mounting section. Its approximate overall height is 72 mm, while the 13 mm bottom tang is intended for compatible WILA Type lower-tool clamping systems.
Made from 42CrMo alloy tool steel and hardened to HRC54±2, the die provides reliable wear resistance, dimensional stability and repeatable performance in industrial sheet metal production.

Why Choose a V12 Die for 1.5mm Sheet Metal?
For conventional air bending, a V-opening approximately six to twelve times the sheet thickness is often used as an initial selection range. A ratio near eight times the material thickness is a common starting point for mild steel:
1.5 mm sheet thickness × 8 = 12 mm V-opening
This relationship makes a V12 die suitable for many general 1.5 mm sheet metal bending applications. It offers a practical balance between forming force, flange capability, natural inside radius and material flow.
However, the 8× guideline is not a universal rule. Stainless steel, aluminium and high-strength materials may require different V-openings because their tensile strength, ductility and springback characteristics differ. Final selection should be confirmed according to the actual material and workpiece drawing.
Typical Applications
This V12 30° WILA Type lower die can be used for:
- Acute bending of approximately 1.5 mm sheet metal
- Pre-bending sheet edges before flattening
- Producing open, closed and teardrop hems
- Forming folded safety edges on panels and covers
- Manufacturing electrical enclosures and cabinet doors
- Bending HVAC panels and ventilation components
- Producing machinery guards and equipment housings
- Forming appliance and metal-furniture components
- Bending mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium sheet
- Medium- and high-volume sheet metal production
- CNC hydraulic and servo-electric press brakes
- Multi-stage bending processes requiring a controlled acute fold
The recommended 1.5 mm material thickness is an application reference rather than an absolute limit. Actual capacity depends on material strength, bending length, punch radius, desired inside radius and forming method.
V6, V8 and V12 Die Selection
| V-Opening | Primary Positioning | Typical Selection Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| V6 | Precision thin-sheet bending | Smaller radius, narrow flange and concentrated bend line |
| V8 | Thin-sheet acute bending and pre-hemming | Balance between compact forming and added clearance |
| V12 | Approximately 1.5 mm sheet bending | Improved material flow and reduced forming force |
This product differentiation allows customers to select the acute-angle die according to sheet thickness and required bend geometry instead of treating all 30° lower dies as interchangeable.
Product Details & Manufacturing Quality
The V12 lower die is manufactured from selected 42CrMo alloy steel to provide sufficient strength, toughness and resistance to repeated loading. Its hardened working area reaches HRC54±2, helping protect the die shoulders and V-groove against premature wear.
The 30° groove, 12 mm V-opening and R1 shoulders are precision machined to maintain consistent forming geometry throughout the tool length. Accurate manufacturing also supports reliable alignment when several segmented sections are installed together.
The wider V12 opening allows the material to move more freely than in V6 or V8 dies. This can help reduce concentrated forming pressure, but the finished inside radius and bend angle must still be verified through calculations and test bending.
Continuous lengths are suitable for long straight components, while segmented sets provide flexibility for boxes, doors, trays, panels and workpieces with interfering flanges.
